How Dental Professionals Should Reflect in GDC Cases

Legal Representation GDC

Dentists Legal Service provides legal advice and representation to dental professionals who are registered or seek registration with the General Dental Council (GDC) and need to demonstrate insight as part of a fitness to practise investigation or other GDC process.

The GDC will examine the level of insight that a dental professional has gained by a given date in the GDC fitness to practise process.

How to Show Insight in GDC Cases

A GDC registrant will need to write about their personal journey, including how the regulatory concerns arose. The dental professional will also need to document the steps taken to rectify the situation, including linking the remediation they have done to their practice. This process of reflection needs to be detailed and of sufficient depth to be deemed reliable and reassuring to those decision makers tasked with adjudicating in the fitness to practise of the GDC registrant.

Decision makers will have regard to the sanctions guidance: Guidance for the Practice Committees, including Indicative Sanctions Guidance, and we recommend that dental professionals have regard to it when they write their reflections. A GDC registrant’s reflections should link back to the codes of conduct and policies relevant to their dental discipline, as well as the conduct of concern. They should identify the steps of analysis that they have undertaken and how they will prevent repetition.
